Today is a big day for me — the day I officially launch alison britt.com, nursing and maternity clothes.
I was planning to launch my e- commerce site earlier, but decided to bump it back because of snow days. I know many business folks are thinking, “What?” But, you see, I am not typical business folk. I am a mom who got crazy busy when three kids were home from school for two weeks straight because of some record-breaking snowfall — beautiful snow that my kids wanted me out playing in. You see, when it snows in North Carolina, it’s a BIG deal.
When it started to snow and the snowball fights lasted all day, for several days, I stressed about trying to get everything done for my e- commerce launch. After stressing for a few days, I just decided to…stop. I thought to myself, “Why? Why am I stressing?” I had an earlier goal, but then life — or really snow —happened. So I let myself off the hook.
This is the beauty of owning your own business. You get to do things your way. I wanted to enjoy the two weeks of snow with my three wild kids and not be stressed about a deadline I created and turn into a grouch monster. I also wanted to do give the launch the attention it deserved. So I did something I would never have done before I became a mother. I pushed the deadline back. And I did not feel like a failure. I felt wise.
This has been a three-and-a-half year journey — a long time to launch a small clothing line. But in truth I was never in a hurry. I paid extreme attention to the details. It took a long time to find beautiful fabric that is ethically made, feels amazing and will last wash after wash. It took a long time to find a socially responsible clothing manufacturer in the USA that could squeeze in my new line. It took over a year of sending samples back and forth, testing cut and style.
Quality takes time. Manufacturing in an ethical manner takes time. Building relationships and trust with vendors take time. And being a parent who seizes the opportunity of snow days takes time. I’ve been so fortunate that I’ve had this time to invest, and I’m feeling lucky and grateful this launch day.
I hope you will check out alisonbritt.com today. See what a mom did over the past four years — a clothing line and a few snowmen. If you sign up for the email newsletter, I will send you a 15% off coupon on your first order.
